Question 19:

What portion of the population is under the age of 15 and over 65?

Answer:

29% of Algeria’s population is under the age of 15 (fourteen and younger).  In addition, 4.7% of the population is over 65 years of age.  Therefore, 33.7% of the overall population of Algeria is either over 65 or under 15.  This creates a ratio of around 1:3 (for every 3 people between the ages of 15 and 64, there is one person who is less than 15 years old or is older than 65 years).

Question 20:

To what degree is AIDS a problem in Algeria?  What are the other major health challenges in Algeria?

Answer:

AIDS is relatively limited in the population of Algeria.  HIV/AIDS has only a 0.1% prevalence rate among adults, and there are only 9,100 people living with the disease throughout the whole country.  The degree of risk for other types of infectious diseases is only estimated at intermediate.  Some of the more common infectious diseases in Algeria are bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever.  All of these are food or waterborne; the only vector borne disease that poses a legitimate threat is the cutaneous leishmaiasis disease (a skin infection) which is a high risk, but only in certain locations.  War is not a constant issue but the recent Civil War, which ended in 1998, took around 100,000 Algerian lives, which had a statistically significant impact on the country's population.
