Question 4:

Describe the climate of the capital city

Answer:

Algeria’s climate is very diverse due to its location.  Algiers, being a coastal city, is significantly colder than other parts of the country.  However, it is still in the temperate climate zone, so the weather is relatively pleasant all year round.  The city enjoys weather very similar to other Mediterranean countries.  During the winter, the temperature averages 50°-54°F and between 75°-75°F during the summertime.  There is an abundant amount of rainfall, averaging 15 to 27 inches per year in the coastal areas.  Some of the Saharan areas and mountainous regions receive less rainfall, but there are less people living there so drought isn’t as big an issue.

Question 6:

Describe the country's topographical features and natural resources

Answer:

Algeria is divided topographically into three main regions that generally run east-west.  The first is the Tell, which is the Mediterranean coastal region.  The second is the High Plateaus, which are more inland and are fairly consistent, until the third region, the Sahara, which covers almost 80% of Algeria’s land.  To the west, Algeria’s border with Morocco is along the Atlas mountains.  The only rivers that are usually flowing are those in the Tell region, but they are not navigable.  Other bodies of water are very small salt lakes and marshes.  The High Plateaus region is very dry and the land becomes increasingly arid as you move southward, eventually merging into complete desert in the Sahara region.  Some of Algeria’s main natural resources are petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, phosphates, uranium, lead and zinc.

Question 7:

Identify native plants and animals

Answer:

Northern Algeria’s native plants are the olive and cork oak.  The coastal plains of this region contain many grape vines, which are endemic to the area.  The mountain and plain regions have large evergreen forests of pines, junipers, and oaks, as well as some deciduous trees.  Warmer areas grow pines, eucalyptus, agaves, and fig trees.  The semi-arid regions contain esparto grass, alfa, and drinn.  The Sahara region to the country’s south contain very sparse vegetation.  Fauna in Algeria comes in many varieties but in limited abundance.  The forests of the mountainous regions are filled with jackals and boars.  The other common mammals of the country are rabbits and jerboas.  The deserts provide little mammal life, but do have a variety of snakes, both poisonous and non poisonous, scorpions, and countless kinds of insects.  Camels are used in great numbers throughout the country.

Question 9:

How have the people modified their environment?

Answer:

People in Algeria have not modified their environment to the same extent as many other countries in the world.  Only 5,600 square kilometers of Algeria’s land is irrigated, and despite the 25% of the population that works in agricultural occupations, only 3% of the country’s land area is cultivated for farming.  Only 1.6% of the country’s land is forested, so deforestation is not an issue.  Mining is kept to a minimum because most areas with mineral deposits are in remote locations that lack the government funding or proper infrastructure for large projects.  Overall, most people have adapted to their environment rather than changed it to suit specific desires.
